Porn Industry Continues Record Setting Pace

The Good Herald reports: “To say that pornography is popular is like saying kids like candy; no kidding. The extent to which porn is indeed popular is the amazing side of the story and even more amazing is that the popularity of porn is on an upward trajectory that even has industry insiders shaking their heads in disbelief.

While the creation of the internet has been one of the greatest achievements of the 20th century, basically putting an entire world of knowledge at your fingertips and on your flat screen, it has done something for the pornography industry that can only be described by the admittedly underwhelming and understated term “transformational”. Sure the pornography business has always been a huge cash cow for the kingpins of that industry, but its reach was confined to print magazines, peep shows, and “artsy” theaters with midnight showings. The internet did for porn what the iPod did for music, only a thousand times more so. And if the stats are correct, the internet is only one of many ways in which people worldwide continue to access pornography.

Pornographic movies have always been around but now that you can download them onto your computer or buy any kind of porn DVD you desire, the number of XXX movies being cranked out by the porn film makers is truly amazing. In a good year, the Hollywood movie industry produces about 500 movies per year which will be seen by approximately 2.8 billion people. Pretty amazing right? Well sure but those numbers are kid stuff compared to the pace of adult movies being cranked out each year. Just a few years ago the porn industry was making more than 11,000 movies per year, and while their productions don’t require quite the same fuss as a Hollywood production, the number of “adult films” hitting the market each year is still quite impressive. And even more impressive is that while the total gross in 2005 for Hollywood films was just under $ 8.6 billion, porn films released in that same year grossed just over $ 8.6 billion.

Go to almost any hotel chain that isn’t owned by the Mormon Church, (the Marriott for one) and you’re likely to have a wide selection of in-room movies at your fingertips. More than 55% of the movies selected in these hotels are adult films and they generate more money for the hotel than the grossly overpriced items in their mini-bar.

Need more evidence for the incredible, and still growing popularity of pornography? Well let’s turn to the undeniable credibility of the Google Search engine to tell us what’s hot and what’s not. By far and away the most widely searched terms on the Google search engine are adult entertainment terms with more than 400 Internet users per second typing salacious search terms into their ubiquitous tool.

We began this discussion with the role that the Internet has played in propelling pornography to new heights in terms of viewers and profits so it’s only fitting that we return to cyber space to drive home the point. Domain names are almost as important to some businesses as the actual business underlying the .com. This is easily seen by the price that some people and companies will pay for a particular domain name. While you might think that pop culture icons like Pepsi, Coke and McDonalds paid the highest prices ever to secure their website domain names, you’d be wrong. The five most expensive domain names ever purchased are those associated with the adult entertainment business with Sex.com topping the list after selling for the price of $ 14 million.

So where does the porn industry go from here? By the looks of it, they have the money to go pretty much anywhere they want, when they want. Stay tuned.
